Important stocks and flows in Gothenburg, that also is essential to other cities is energy, materials, water, food and capital: Energy - Is one of the most important stock and flow that every city must have. The energy which in some cases are stocked as water before processed as nuclear or water energy is ment to power the city and to be sold to other countries. Energy is used for households appliances, powertools, car fuel, streetlamps/signs and alot of other electrical machines. The flow of energy is that which is used and what is needed for these machines etc. Because we live in such a energy based society it is crucial that we always have it in stock and in flow. Material - To be able to improve our cities we must have materials that can be used for construction, rebuilding and repairing. A material used alot in swedish cities these days is wood. Wood is stocked in nature, waiting to be processed to a material that is used for construction, repairing and rebuilding. Since wood is a green material, that consumes CO2, it is a very environmentally good material to use in cities, where the CO2 could become high. Wood can later be recycled which is even a better alternative than other materials. The flow of wood would be the life cycle of the material, from leaving the stock to be processed and be used in buildings etc, to later be recycled and reused. Water - Is essential to every city where the stock is the place to store water and the flow the distrubution of water. Almost every living organism need water to survive, and we also use it to create materials, cool machines in production and for hygienic reasons. Water is recycled after its use in dams where the sediment often clear the water from bacteria and materials, sometime its needed to add chemicals to purify the water so it can be reused. Food - As in livestock or organic plants are placed often outside the city. It is waiting to be processed as food and to be spread throughout the cities foodstores. The flow would here be the foods transportation to different places. Food can be recycled to energy and other stuff after its used. Capital - Is important for every city where as it can be used to buy essential things that the city needs. It could be to buy energy, food, materials etc. The flow of capital is when transactions are made and the stock when its in the bank. It is important that these stock and flows are as close to the source its needed as possible, this to benifit the economy and the environment of the city. Althought trade is neccessairy because a city cant produce everything needed in human society. Lack of space, workforce, climate and economy makes it difficult to produce everything. The concept of these elements being environemtal and cheap is essential for a citys success. We can make this happen by technology progression in these fields. In this case, in Gothenburg, I would say that the most important elements to be locally produced is water, food and materials, since these has a major impact on the CO2 by transports. Energy that in some cases needs pipelines or electrical grids could be bought from other countries, althought its always better if its local. The capital which only depends on our electrical capacity and trades doesnt have a big impact on the environment. It is important that a city can produce and buy and sell these elements in such a way that doesnt harm our lands, this will create a sustainable city.
