In and around my living area, the city of The Hague in the Netherlands, there are quite a few ecosystem services due to the coastal environment. Provisioning Services An example of a Provisioning Service is the fish fishermen catch daily in the North Sea and partly sold in the city as food. Another example is fresh drinking water that is filtered by the sand grounds of the dune landscape. Regulating Services Local climate and air quality are enhanced by some large parks and a small forest in the middle of the city. Although these Regulating Services are rather small, but they do have a positive effect. Another example is erosion prevention at the coast which is achieved by dams and a ‘sand motor’ to replenish the coastal areas with ‘fresh’ sand. Habitat or Supporting Services A large dune area at the west side of the city offers a quite habitat for different species, such as birds. Cultural Services Obviously the beaches attract a lot of tourists and the dune area has some recreational paths for walking and cycling. Also, the beach has a good surf.
