Stocks and flows of Sonderborg Three stocks and flows in the area of Sonderborg are people, water and food. Sonderborg is a small town in south Denmark surrounded by water and country side. As it is the only bigger town in a bigger radius many people live, work go shopping or visit evens in Sonderborg. Due to the good public connections like a highway, train station and airport the city is well connected. This makes it easy for people to visit the city. But there is another reason why people move to this town, the university and school. Sonderborg hosts many educational institutions such as the university of southern Denmark, an international School and several other small higher education schools. Because of this there are many young students moving in to the city, some of them stay after their education but many leave again to find a job at another place. The location of Sonderborg is a little bit unique. the main part of the city is located on the island Als and a small part is on the mainland. The town is split by a small arm of the Baltic sea, which means a constant flow of water. With the water there are constantly new things entering the city, most obvious are the boats but the water provides also other things like fish for example, this leads to my last point, food. Of course every town needs to have a flow of food if they want their inhabitants to survive. Around the city there is much of farmland that is used to produce local food which is sold by the farmers, local stores or is given to the local supermarkets. Other food which are not produced locally are transported in to be sold to the citizen or to be processed in a restaurant. For the future I predict that the city will grow. currently a new hotel is under construction which allows for more tourists. Also there is a huge amount of surrounding land that can be used for industry or residential areas to expand the city and make it more attractive. The water of course gives a natural limit for the city boundary in one direction but as the city is already split by the water there is more space on the outsides to expand. The water can also become an issue, as global warming is a well-known issue, the sea level could rise of catastrophes like flooding can cause damages and issues. The picture shows the university on the water front, behind the university the train station can be found and the two bridges connect the two parts of the town. The big bridge in the background belongs to the highway that goes around the north of the city and connect to one of the main highways of Denmark.
