1a. provisioning services Food: Food is necessary for human survival and it is mostly grown in managed agro-ecosystems like farms, poultries and ranches. Due to the rapid urbanization in Lagos, food production has dwindled almost totally. Groceries and food are bought and transported from other states. Seafood can be gotten from Lagos because of the abundance of water bodies. However there are numerous farms of varying size and crop production in less urbanized states in Nigeria. Chi Farms is an example of such in Nigeria. There are many forests in Nigeria located away from the cities. These are also a source of wild foods and animals like the guinea fowl and bushmeat. Freshwater rivers are a source of fish and the seas provide seafood. b. regulating services Local climate and air quality: trees provide shade that reduce the impact of sun rays and help in cooling the environment. Apart from afforestation activities going on all around Lagos, it is common practice to plant trees and shrubs in homes. These improve the quality of the living environment. Homes with some level of vegetative cover usually reduce the heat indoors and encourage outdoor activities. Pollination: birds and insects pollinate plants and help in the production of fruits and vegetables; assisting the continuous supply for food. c. habitat or supporting services Habitat for species: marine and vegetation ensure the survival of animal and plant species and prevent extinction. Different animals have their contribution to the balance of the ecosystem and without their natural habitat, they would die off and the ecosystem will suffer. There are also micro ecosystems scattered around Lagos, in form of green areas in homes. Examples of conservation ecosystems in Nigeria are Lekki Conservation Center, Yankari Game Reserves, Obudu Cattle Ranch. All these focus maintaining the natural habitat of plants and animals. d. cultural services Recreation and mental and physical health: green space, as well as water, is used for sports and recreation facilities. Vegetation and bodies of water have a calming effect that is a relief from the harshness of the city. Kayaking is becoming a favoured sport in Lagos. Ilase Beach for example, is a private getaway beach that is popular with the youth in Lagos. Waterfront houses are available for rent and it is relaxing to walk along the beach.
