1. The temperature differences n the US cities: Miami is up to 17,0º F hotter than in the nearby rural areas, Los Angels is up to 24,0º F hotter and Chicago is 21,0º F hotter. 2. Main UHI effects in my area A study from the University of Campinas suggests that the average temperature in the urban area is of 22,4º C. An article on the temperatures and climate in Barao Geraldo, which is a district in the city of Campinas where I live, stated that the average temperature is of 19,7º C. It can be concluded that the central urban area is 2,7º C hotter than its nearby rural areas. The first image is of the central urban area in the city of Campinas, which clearly contains a large amount of concrete buildings gathered together and few green areas that were preserved. It has a larger UHI effect due to the high buildings and wider asphalt and concrete covered areas that block the sun from penetrating the land, attracting more heat. The lack of a better distribution of the buildings and few green areas contribute to the higher temperature as well. The second image is from the district I live in called Barao Geraldo, which is mostly residential, but contains one of the country’s best university’s as well. The image shows the university surrounded by residential areas. It contains more green areas and almost no concrete buildings. 3. Proposed Measures To decrease the UHI effect in the city I would suggest an urban plan that takes into consideration the different transportation methods that doesn’t only include highways, such as subways, pedestrian sidewalks and safe bike paths so that the people become the priority of the city and not cars. 4. UHI effect concerning policy making in my area There is a law that doesn’t allow buildings higher than two feet tall to be built in Barao Geraldo to avoid congestion in general, but it also avoids large commercial and business areas that tend to be pure concrete buildings, trapping in heat. Other than that there are no real policies that I’m aware of or that I could find.
