Provisioning services In my area there are a numerous provisioning services. It is very popular to forage foods around the city, for instance picking apples, elderberries or even ramsons in the cemeteries. And many people have startet growing their own food on balconies, roofs and in court yards. Another example is from our harbour where the water is clean enough that a company has established an oyster farm. Another example is that our local governtment in Copenhagen has decided that we should sort our garbage (which we already do in many different types) – or rather we should through our biodegradeable trash away separately so the city can collect it and use it as biofuel. Regulating services We have quite a few parks within the city that are green and filled with trees. These all provide a better local climate and store greenhouse gases. Thankfully the city will be plating more trees over the next few years. Habitat or Supporting services On the outskirts of Copenhagen there is a large green area called Fælleden, which is protected from development. The area is a habitat for many different species – animals and plants. The area is very close to the centre of the city and creates an escape for anyone who wants to be surrounded by nature. The area is also used to educate children in how to take care of nature, and it is a plsce where people often forage for berries or fruits or to watch the many different types of animals. Cultural services The closest park to my home is also a large playground where kids can run around under the trees while playing. It would be very hard to find a green area in Copenhagen that does not have playgrounds for kids, courts for playing basketball or soccer, or even a route for runners. The main sunday activity here in Copenhagen is talking a walk in a green area, whether it be along the lakes, the harbour, in a park or on the beach. We are very lucky to have all of those options, but I think it is a very concious decision from the city planners, that the city have so many recreational offers – to attract tourists to a clean green city.
