Based on a document highlighting the standards for Citizen Science, written in 2015, the following guidelines encompass the necessary information for setting up a citizen science project: 1. The input of citizens should be transparent and not subjected to any sort of bias. 2. The input of citizens should be subjected to the relevant quality control, and the researchers / citizen scientists should adhere to ethical codes and means in order to preserve the integrity of the project. 3. Efforts should be made to safeguard the intellectual property rights derived from citizen science projects. 4. The organisation and governance of the project should be made explicit to everyone, preferably in writing. 5. The researchers should ensure that the costs of the project are matched by adequate funding through a variety of sources (such as crowdfunding). 6. The necessary health and safety protocol for both, human beings and the environment, must be followed at all times.
