I am Yadunath Ravikumar from Singapore. The most preferred mode of transport to office for me is the trains as they are fast, affordable and reliable. The trains are overcrowded during peak hours in the morning and the evenings but they reach on time. Only downside I see for the trains are there is no view of outsides from the train as majority of MRT tracks in Singapore are underground. Majority of the crowd on MRT’s don’t talk or socialise they are stuck to their cell phones. The use of cell phones makes people inconsiderate and most aren't willing to move in to make way for fellow passengers during the peak hours. Peak hour MRT ride is a fast one but an unpleasant one. The second preferred is buses as they give me unlimited views of the city as I travel from destination A to B. They are cheap and comfortable. The downside with buses in Singapore are the frequency is not reliable. Buses can be stuck in traffic and cannot be taken during peak hours if you need to reach on correct time. So I prefer taking hem only on casual trips. Atleast the sights outside can keep you pleasant compared to MRT’s. Taxis in Singapore are also good. I prefer taking taxis during the off peak hours as they are faster and don’t have the issue of getting stuck in traffic. Usual commute to office costs S$20 per ride from home, where as train is S$1.96. This makes taxis the most expensive method of transport. Most Singapore taxis and buses run on petrol so they are not very environment friendly mode of transport considering carbon emissions. MRT’s run on electricity but all electricity produced in Singapore comes from gas and oil, so MRT’s may not be as environmentally friendly as we think. The best and the happiest mode of transport I personally enjoy is my walks to the local shops. Majority of footpaths in residential districts are covered and shaded and they are well lit during night time. So they make for comfortable and safe mode of transport. Bicycling through the park connector networks in Singapore is another mode of transport that I use on weekends. The parks are green and vibrant with multitude of activities. People gathering for picknics, Old uncles playing Majong (Chinese chess), kids playing around together the green trees and the blue waters keeps you the most happy.
