Provisioning Services: Food There is an local NGO called ANC - Associação de Agricultura Natural de Campinas (Association of Natural Agriculture of Campinas) that produces organic food. The association also holds organic fairs and other events. In addition, Campinas has the fourth largest center for food distribution in the country (CEASA). Regulating services: Moderation of extreme events The city of Campinas suffers from environmental stress, being considered one of the most affected areas by floods and silting since the urban area has less than 5% of vegetal covering. To help mitigate those events, the local government are implementing ecological corridors in addition to the urban forests and parks. Habitat or supporting services: Habitats for species The city of Campinas maintains the Santa Genebra Forest, an environmental protection area considered the second largest urban forest in Brazil (the first is the Tijuca Forest in Rio de Janeiro). In 1983, the area was listed as Natural Heritage by the CONDEPHAAT; thus, there should be no construction in a range of 30 meters around the forest. Research have shown that there area bout 150 species of birds living in the area, 21 species of snakes, many spiders and butterflies, monkeys and also predator animals such as pumas, maned wolves and bush dogs. Human Health: Recently, there was a ellow fever outbreak in some Brazilian states, including the state os São Paulo and the city of Campinas. Biologists said that the monkeys were the first animals to die to the fever and it worked as a warning sign for public authorities to act in order to avoid the fever by carrying out the vaccination of the population living near areas where the monkeys had been found dead. These preservation areas helped to locate the focus of the mosquitos contaminated by the yellow fever virus. Cultural Services: Recreation and Mental and Physical Health The main urban public park in the city of Campinas is the Parque Portugal (also known as Lagoa do Taquaral). It is a wooded park with a beautiful lagoon at the center (where people can see and visit a replica of a caravel). Also, there is a science museum, a planetarium, a indoor sports stadium and swimming pool, a concert auditorium, and several sports facilities, such as, a long running track, football fields, sand pits, etc.
