LICO, ARIS ANGELO Paranaque City, Philippines. 1. The top 5 livability criteria I’ve devised are the following: a. Environment b. Economy c. Health chare d. Education e. Transportation 2. I’m currently living at Paranaque City, Philippines; the principal factor of why we’ve decided to live in this area is due to its location. Manila, the capital of the Philippines, for so long the center of development had been apparent to this city. A lot of universities were made within the vicinity of Manila and henceforth was known as “University Belt”. However, throughout the years, a lot of people have flocked in Manila City due to its prominence and has resulted to over population and crowdedness as shown in figure 01. Figure .01 (BBC News) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/06/world_manila_slum_life/html/1.stm Paranaque City on the other hand is not that very far from Manila City. As a student like me, commuting is one of the most convenient way to go to my University. Also, the city of Paranaque as seen in figure 02, is quite near in the business capital of the Philippines which is Makati City which makes Paranaque City a very good and viable place to live in. Figure 02. (Google Maps) In terms of health care and economy, The City of Paranaque has a lot of hospitals capable of catering to the needs of the people. Some may not be as equipped as others, but most of them do. Economy on the other hand seems to be fair, we do have a lot of market that we could benefit from. The water distribution and electricity are also available and ample for the people. The Environment however may not be as good as it seems, The city of Paranaque is most likely to be very dusty area and the wind velocity here in the Philippines is not that powerful but enough to make you squint your eyes due to the dust. 3. To answer the third question, I’ve set a certain percentage of which I’ve rated upon my city with the 5 livability criteria that I’ve devised above in question #1. The following are: a. Environment – 65%: Since the City is very dusty and most likely to be unclean. However, during the rainy season, there are no apparent flooding within the area, and if it may happen, it’s not that high. b. Economy: 65%: Although the city of Paranaque may have the physiological needs apparent to anyone else, most of the natural resources such as food are most likely to be imported from other cities and rural areas. Hence without the help of these cities, Paranaque City would have a hard time. c. Health Care – 80%: Hospitals in the Paranaque City is not that luxurious as compared to other hospitals here in the Metro Manila. However, it’s enough to support the community and the people with its needs. d. Education – 75%: public school and private schools are also available in this city. e. Transportation – 70%: The way of transport in the city is good enough, Roads are available and a lot of people depend on it. However, due to the rate and volume of cars passing through these roads, traffic congestions gets the best of these roads which makes it inefficient. In average, the Paranaque City is rated to be 71% with the reasons instigated above. 4. If I were the Mayor of this city, I would set a viable place to set up a farm from which we could get our own food and not only depend on the imported goods from other rural areas and other cities. I would also regulate the vehicles passing through these roads to make our way of transportation efficient for everyone else. 5. The cities that I’ve considered if I’m going to transfer to another place are the following: a. Makati City i. Economy: Having it as the business capital of the Philippines makes it one of the top cities with good economic status. ii. Transportation: The City of Makati has some good transportation ways, especially for commuters. However, just like any other city, the traffic congestion gets the best of these transportation ways. iii. Health Care: they have on of the best hospitals here in the Philippines of which it is the Makati Medical Center. iv. Education: The Education as well is also very good for the city of Makati. With a lot of universities, private schools, and public schools available. v. International Community: Having it as the business capital of the Philippines, it has a very good reputation in the international community of which attracts a lot of foreign investors in the city and also in the country. For the other two cities, they have pretty much the same criteria as what I’ve instigated above in question #1. The two cities are Baguio City and Binan City, Baguio has a very good Environment, known for its temperate weather, This makes it a viable place of living since a lot of people would just like to commute and not having it feeling like a burden. They also have good Health Care with a lot of hospitals that could cater for the needs of the people; and also very good education and transportation that accommodates the people as well. Binan City on the other hand is an emerging city, a place that used to be a rural area, now being developed as to be a very viable place for a good economy and education area. Recently, they built a hospital that is enough to cater the people, and also, the environment in this city is very good. Clean, and organized in every turn.
