The dominant fossil fuels used in Canada are Natural Gas followed by Oil. They are used mainly for Transportation and Other. In order to mitigate the reliance on these fossil fuels, many initiatives could be implemented. Canada is bordered on three sides by oceans and has a massive supply of fresh inland water, creating the possibility of generating energy by the implementation of dams as well as turbines which can be turned by the current of moving water. Also, Canada has massive stretches of open prairie land where the wind is consistently powerful, the implementation of wind turbines is an enormous possibility for the generation of clean renewable energy for Canada. Finally, Canada has some of the most consistently brightest areas in the world (Southern Alberta being a prime example - see link - http://neighbourpower.com/alberta-solar-potential/). This leads to the possibility of generating energy through PV panels to lessen the dependency on fossil fuels, which is a major issue in Alberta - one of the worst producers/dependents of oil and contributors to Greenhouse Gases and CO2 emissions. Not only would this be a shift in the right environmental direction for Alberta but it would also serve to diversify the provincial economy - which means that when fossil fuels are no longer accepted or needed, Alberta will still be able to generate money and not have to suffer crippling unemployment.
