FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 3: "Factors of Livability"
Uploaded on 2017-05-08 by Konrad Pawlaczyk
World’s most liveable cities according to me. ( I listed only the cities I have been to) 1.Berlin 2.Warsaw 3.Paris 4.Rome 5.London _____________________________________________________________________________ What makes a city liveable? Affordability. Decent houses for people with different incomes. I think it is very important for a city to be home for everyone and to be inclusive. 2. Good transportation. It is important for the city’s inhabitants to be able to go to different parts of it, without the need to change ways of transport many times. It is important for the transportation to be logical and corresponding to people’s needs. It is also important for the transport schedule to be availible for everyone and easy to access. 3.Protection from the excess of the natural environment. It is important for a city to have shelters protecting from the rain, or the sun. Cities should have urban-microclimates 4.Nature. It is important for cities to be green and to provide space when people can connect with nature and spend their time surrounded by it. 5. Places for different people and age groups. What I mean by this is, that cities are often not designed with regards to the elderly, and the young. I believe that it is important to have facilities making everybody’s life easier, and to provide them with entertainment etc. ______________________________________________________________________________ The city where I live right now is Canterbury. I did not list it before since, Canterbury is quite small, therefore I cannot compare it with significant cities. Its transportation is not very good, there are times when buses don’t go for 5/6 h, so if I want to get somewhere I need to walk. Because of the fact that it does not take more than 40 min to get everywhere by foot, or 15 min by bike, it is not very annoying, but it is a problem. It is surrounded by nature so it is good, but access to nature could be improved by making more parks and places where people can connect with nature on daily basis. The prices of houses in Canterbury are relatively good in comparison fx. to London. It provides protection from rain while being in the city centre, but it could be improved by making more of sheltered space.
