1. The picture shows the flow of vehicles regulated by traffic lights at Attakulangara junction, in Trivandrum(not listed in place), Kerala. The number of vehicles moving towards the junction is comparatively large from different directions, along with this, all the billboards and signage cause confusion. People(the users) manage to find their way despite of all the distractions. One of the reasons for that is, locals are used to such a scenario and know what to expect when they approach the junction. For most outsiders this junction might seem a little intimidating. Having said that, there are certain flaws in the way users handle traffic when there is rush. Visible information from the picture: The movement of vehicles regulated by traffic lights. Traffic lights powered by solar panels. Signage, billboards and advertisements that face the road. In the picture, Auto-rickshaws and motorcycles form the majority of the flowing traffic. Very few pedestrians. The vernacular is wide and does not follow a common style. Public Transportation buses are visible. Use of CCTV to find traffic violations. 2. Invisible information: 1. The road/area of road marked red is the path that is used for the vehicles turning left (green signal is shown). As we can see, due to the rush in traffic going forward(red signal is shown), motorcycles cut the path that is shown in red in order to move in front. As the number of motorcycles accumulate, the path towards left will be blocked and most vehicles will find it hard to move towards the left, even though they have the green signal. This shows the lack of discipline in traffic which is caused by the rush. 2.In this picture, the bus and auto-rickshaws represent public transportation. When taking the case of the bus, fairly large number of seats are unoccupied (marked in blue). Public transportation buses form the majority of the area occupied in roads but if the buses are running empty that means people are using other means of transportation, most likely their own vehicles, which therefore increases the density in traffic furthermore. 3. Translating invisible information to knowledge: With reference to the 2nd point, the case of public transportation buses- The reasons behind people choosing their own vehicles over public transportation(which is much cheaper) should be understood and used to improve the services offered in public transportation for the users. In such a way, public transportation can be promoted so that there will be more users. Gradually use of private vehicles might decrease and volume in traffic might decrease as well.
