3 important “stocks and flows” of the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil: 1) People Many people flow in Belo Horizonte every day to work, coming from all the nearby cities that compose its metropolitan region. On the other hand, since an industrial center has been formed in the nearby cities of Contagem and Betim, there are also some people leaving Belo Horizonte to work there every day. People could be able to work where they live, so they wouldn’t have to spend so much time every day going from one city to another and wouldn’t overload the traffic system. 2) Water Belo Horizonte was originally established around the Arrudas River and used its water as supply. But as the cities throughout the course of the river (including Belo Horizonte) started throwing their sewer into the river, the Arrudas itself became pure sewer. And now Belo Horizonte sends away its original source of water as sewer and brings in clean water from other distant sources. The sewer produced could have another end, that didn’t involve pouring into the river, so it would eventually become clean again and the citizens could enjoy the presence of clean water to do endless activities. 3) Density Since Belo Horizonte is the state’s capital and a big business attractor center, it attracts people from the hinterland. And since the city is now entirely urbanized and have nowhere to expand to (it doesn’t have any rural areas anymore – conurbation took place on it's borders), it has now influenced a massive densification of the nearby cities, because people are now establishing on the surroundings to be able to work at the capital, given the high land prices at Belo Horizonte. Infrastructure could be provided in the small towns, so that people wouldn’t migrate to the capital and overload it.
