Compulsory Exercise 3 Place of residence: Athens, Greece 1) What are the dominant fossil fuels used in your country? The main fossil fuel used in Greece is oil and it is mainly imported. Out of the 41.45Mtoe of production and imports 25.61 is imported oil and only 0.06 is oil produced in the country giving a total of 25.67Mtoe of oil. Next, is coal with 6.58Mtoe, 6.38Mtoe of which is produced in the country. 2) Where are the dominant fossil fuels mainly used for in your country? Oil is mainly used for transport, also a big part of it is exported. Specifically, out of 29.75Mtoe of oil: 15.59Mtoe is exported, 5.46Mtoe is used in transport, 2.64 goes in bunkers, 1.13 is used in the industry and 1.45 is used in other ways. Coal is mainly used in power stations for the production of electricity. Out of 6.58Mtoe of coal 6.27Mtoe is used for the production of electricity and of that 5.69Mtoe is lost through power losses. 3) It is your task to create a new policy in order to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy of your country. How would you do that? Think of how you can improve the sources and the consumption of energy. I think that Greece is a country that could easily use alternative sources of energy that do not harm the environment as the climate and general weather conditions of the country are advantageous. Greece, like other Mediterranean countries, has sun throughout all year (almost). Solar panels have started to appear but they are often used by individuals for house use only and not as a general policy or on a bigger scale. I think that the sun could become a great source of energy for Greece and solar energy could cover part of the energy demands of the country as, for example, it is a great alternative to electricity. The benefits of solar panels should be advertised more to big companies and industries and they should become more accessible for individual use as well. Another great use of solar energy would be in street lamps and lighting in public buildings. Wind and hydropower should be used more as well. Moreover, people should try to find ways for the storage and use of energy coming from the movement of cars or people. I think that this could work in highway or bustling public buildings. Some attempts of this sort are being made like the “Sustainable dance floor” that converts kinetic energy to electricity. Laws should be established in order for all of these energy sources to start being used widely. Maybe laws restricting oil and coal use would be a solution or laws determining that public buildings should be energy self-sufficient. Also, I think that a big part of the solution would be to raise awareness so that people recognize and really pay attention to the environmental problem and take action.
