Compulsory Exercise 3 Module 6: Energy and Livability Part I 1 - Dominant Fossil Fuels used in Brasil According to the International Energy Agency, the dominant fossil fuels used in Brasil are Oil (122.8 Mtoe) and Natural gas (19.3 Mtoe). 2 - Uses of Dominant Fossil Fuels in Brasil Oil is mainly used for transport. Gas is mainly used in industry. 3 - New policies to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy a - Support the construction of new wind farms mainly at the Northeast coast, where deserted beaches and flatlands, in addition to the constant and strong winds, creates an ideal spot to produce wind energy. The image shows a wind farm I visited in January 2017, in Pernambuco, Brasil. b - Invest in technology to produce national electric cars and buses, to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Also, invest in large-scale public transport systems, that could reduce the number of cars in the streets. c - To build small scale hydroelectric power plants, since the large scale power plants need to flood large areas causing environmental impacts. Brazil has the third highest potential to produce hydroelectricity in the world, but it must be done in a planned way in order to avoid, or at least reduce, damages to the environment.
