What ecosystem services do you have in and around your living area? Give at least one example for each of the four types of ecosystem services. Make clear in your answer where you can find the ecosystem service and what the ecosystem offers to your living area. To support your answers you are asked to provide one or more images for every example that describe the respective services. a. Provisioning services: food production Netherlands is the second largest exporter of agricultural products after US (which is 230 times bigger). Not only fruits and vegetable but also meat. The farm animals are mostly in the south of Netherlands, North Brabant. The Dutch agricultural production is an ecosystem that benefit people since the country has a secure food production. b./c. Regulating services: pollination, biological control / Habitat or Supporting services: habitats for species, maintenance of generic diversity Workgroup Noord Natuur has worked since 2015 with a lot of energy for more biodiversity in 's-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant. The group is formed by concerned citizens that organize initiatives for a healthy and sustainable environment. The main project is to plant and take care of perennial flowers along a very busy road Bruistensingel. Many insects such as butterflies and bees will be attracted and find food of shelter. Meadow Sage, a typical plant for the river, along with other regional plant will be planted. There will be a mutual collaboration between city hall and citizens, the city will pay the seeds while the citizens will do the maintenance. The aims of the project are many; a sustainable contribution of the pleasure of living in this part of the town and mostly attract bees for pollinations. There has been a study that in the Netherlands the local bee diversity has drop down “Depending on the assemblage and location, pollinator declines were most frequent in habitat and flower specialists, in univoltine species, and/or in nonmigrants. In conjunction with this evidence, outcrossing plant species that are reliant on the declining pollinators have themselves declined relative to other plant species. Taken together, these findings strongly suggest a causal connection between local extinctions of functionally linked plant and pollinator species.” Science Magazine http://science.sciencemag.org/content/313/5785/351 d. Cultural services: tourism 15.5 million foreign tourists will stay in the Netherlands in 2016. Absolute growth figures are highest in the neighbouring countries. Amsterdam in the city that is “suffering” more for the problem of tourism. Inhabitants see that a” ‘Disneyfication’ of the city centre is happening.
