The picture shows an area at the center of Madison, WI. Visible in the photo are some older houses along one side of a busy street, a lakeside public park and university buildings in the background. This area is attractive due to its proximity to the university, downtown, and various forms of entertainment. Two pieces of information not visible in the photo are: 1) the old buildings generally used for student housing at present are gradually being replaced with modernized and renovated apartment buildings that are not affordable for most students, and 2) public transportation is not very reliable in this small city, making it difficult for students to live far from the university campus. Trends in student movement and new constructions should be combined into knowledge necessary for planning public transportation infrastructure and affordable housing for the future.
