In Quito, many posts are still used to carry the power cables. This shows dependency on the over-ground electric system. These posts carry electric and telephone cables and are crucial for certain parts of the city. Under-ground electric systems have not been developed due to the high costs. In low income neighborhoods such as the one in the picture, it is even more difficult to develop an under-ground electric system. Besides the poor system quality the aesthetics of the neighborhood is also affected. The poor system design also influences on the electricity costs and uses.
