Picture is from http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/San_Jose,_California Ecosystem services in my area include * Provisioning services - local CSA (community supported agriculture) programs as well as farmer’s markets that can be found all over the Bay Area, not just San Jose, in order to promote local and fresh food. * Regulating services - a local non-profit, Our City Forest, encourages the care of and planting of the urban forest. Their goal is to plant 1 million trees. Trees provide relief from the urban heat island effect, as well as scrub the air of particulate matter and carbon dioxide. * Habitat or supporting Services - the City of San Jose runs a composting workshop series to educate the public about composting - either “regular” composting as well as vermin composting. The City also offers discounts on composting systems to encourage behavioral change and adoption. * Cultural services - the City of San Jose offers a community gardens program as well as numerous local programs including public libraries, parks, community centers.
