FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2017-03-13 by Pedro Dias Carrilho
1- This image shows a two-way street with a bicycle lane, some unoccupied land alongside, and some trees. Several people are making use of this street for walking, running and cycling. There is very little motorized traffic, even though it is permited. We can see that there is no sidewalk, so pedestrians use the bicycle lane, and cyclists use the cars lanes. 2- One example of invisible information that can be extracted is the number of people that uses this street per day, in different times of day. We can see that many people make use of the street. But how many? and under what circunstances? is it crowded like this every day? on just on sundays? Another example is: for what reason people mostly use this street? Where do they live? Is it just for sports and leisure? Or also for commute? 3- Regarding the second example, knowing the main reasons why people use this street, city planners could decide on the better zoning for the land alongside it, and what kind of use of land would improve land value and liveability on the area. Also, they could decide on how this street should articulate with other streets in the region, and whether it needs public tranportation or not. If there is little use for commute and high use for sports and leisure, maybe the traffic of motorized vehicles could be prohibited in certain segments.
