The ability of Hong Kong, one of the most densely populated cities in the world to thrive can be credited to its infrastructure. A web of subway lines, ferries, and above-ground transport options (buses, trams, taxis) shuttle millions of people every day. Modern engineering and construction has allowed the construction of skyscrapers to maximize the amount of dedicated urban space, while protecting most of the islands’ area as natural, forested areas. Water, sewage, and electricity infrastructure has enabled people the city to be built across various elevations. World class airports and seaports, and network infrastructure has allowed the city to be one of the world’s leading financial centres and gateways to Mainland China. Finally, all these forms of infrastructure have helped Hong Kong to connect and even spur development in its surrounding territory (the cities of Macau and Shenzhen).
