1. How would you define livability? I would define livability as the capacity of a city/place to shelter and take care of the people living there, this including a wide range of concepts, either rational and measurable ones or more sentimental and incalculable. A livable city would be the one that is warm and welcoming to all its citizens, and that means that, on one hand, it must be affordable, and on the other, it must reach some basic hygiene and health, security… standards, but also must have features that fulfill more than its inhabitants basic needs such as green spaces, leisure activities,... 2. If you need to define livability with the following terms, how would you rank them? (1: most important - 7: least important) Housing-(affordability and access) 3 Neighborhood (access to life, work, and play) 5 Transportation (safe and convenient options) 6 Environment (clean air and water) 1 Health (prevention, access and quality) 2 Engagement (civic and social involvement) 7 Opportunity (inclusion and possibilities) 4 3. Choose three cities in the United States (preferable cities in different states) and go to the following webpage: https://livabilityindex.aarp.org. Search for the chosen cities at the livability index. I choose San Franciso, Chicago and Atlanta 4. Have a look at the livability scores. How high is the livability score of every city? Please note the scores of this question in a table like the one below. Click on "customize this score" and customize the scores according to your rankings for question 2. Shift all the bars to the left (less important), except the term which is most important to you. Shift the bar of your "number one" to the right (more important). 5. How much has the livability score of every city changed? Please note the scores of this question in a table like the one below. City Livability Score Customized Livability score Change (+/-) e.g.New York 62 53 -9 San Francisco 66 57 -9 Chicago 53 36 -17 Atlanta 48 18 -30 6. Can you explain the change in livability scores of your cities? Do this on a basis of the terms in your ranking (e.g. Transport is very important to me. When I customized the term Transportation at the Livability index into a higher importance, the total livability score went down. This means that...). Clean air and water is very important to me, in fact it seems that clean water should be a basic in a livable city. When I customized de therm Environment at the livability index into a higher importance the total livability of each of the3 cities I chose went down. This means that even if in a occidental and developed cities we take for granted that concepts as clean water or clean air, our production and consumption ways are affecting very severely the livability of our cities. It is clear even though we fell it is time to pay attention to more complex concepts such as inclusion, neighborhood, happiness, we can put aside environment and we must be aware that we are ignoring a subject that directly affects our health, our longevity and is risking our future.
