This is a photograph of the Scott monument in Edinburgh which was erected in the mid 1800's and was dedicated to the author Sir Walter Scott. |It is the largest monument to an author in the world. The building is built using locally sourced sand stone. The sandstone is very porous and over the years the natural oils which seep from the sandstone blackend the stone as it combined with the pollution in the air from Steam trains and the industry of the day. This adds to the Gothic appearance of the building and makes it stand out against the other buildings. This is a good example of how locally sourced building materials can be most effective and give character to an area.
