The newer parts of Kolkata are rapidly developing as an IT sector area. Due to requirement of high rises and fast construction in congested areas, RCC frame structures are in high demand. Even though locally available materials like bricks and bamboo are abundantly available, RCC buildings are preferred due to high land cost and lower plot sizes. Since skilled labour required for this is not available locally, the technical know-how and the construction process are definitely a part of the globalized economy. Cement and steel industries are now abundant in the country, but not sufficient to cater to supply deficit. Lower import rates from other countries help fill the gap between demand and supply. For example, certain grades of iron and steel are imported from steel surplus countries like Japan, China and Korea, and preferred over the materialfrom domestic industry due to cheaper imports. This is proving detrimental to the domestic industry.
