This picture represents the construction of a residential building near the European Commission district in Brussels. I would imagine the aim of such a project being the realisation of a residential community near the workplace so that people can benefit from shorter travel times to work. As you can see the building block of this building is cement. The EU with its free trade agreements deals may have influenced the import of such material as Belgium is a small country and doesn't have enough resources to be self-sufficient for its population. With Germany and France being a neighbouring country and great producers of cement, it may have originated from there. However, transportation of such material and its global supply poses risks to the environment. Tracing back the raw materials may not be apparent and the origin of the material used in this building may even come from China or India were prices are lower.
