FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

2) Visible The down town area of Lisbon. A lively area, with old/historic buildings, many of which apparently recently renovated, if residential if offices is not precise, and construction works are still in place as shown by the cranes in the back. Apparently good walking facilities, close roads for pedestrians and plenty of visitors, on a sunny afternoon. Invisible What is visitors’ purpose in the area? Shopping; meeting friends; just walking around? Do they like the area? Does it respond to their needs and to the reason that first took them there? Who are the visitors’? Locals? Foreigners? Tourists? Does the area attract more visitors or less than in other periods? 3) Knowing the visitor’s purpose in the area allows urban planners and managers to set programmes that can respond and incentive the deployment of the services needed for the area, thus responding to the citizen needs. Knowing if the visitor likes the area of not, if the services available respond to their needs, are they buying, how many financial transactions are made in the area? Having the people feedback on how they interact with the area can foster the promotion of better services, infrastructures, acknowledging what’s missing and fostering the deployment of policies and urban strategies that make the area more lively, inviting and user friendly.
