In South Africa, early building materials mostly consisted of mud, clay and timber. All of which are found almost everywhere in the country. The building materials used in the picture are bricks (clay), mortar (cement) and steel (reinforcing and window frames). All of these materials are, to a certain extent, produced in South Africa, however other countries on the African continent use the same building materials, which may not be locally available to them. While some of these building materials may or may- not be part of a wider global economy (depending on country) the building methods and conventions definitely are.
