1. Where would you measure the maximum UHI intensity? The maximum UHI is bejst measured by the difference between a location in the city center and other in a undeveloped area in its fringes. an alternative possibility for a second location if a rural one is not possible is an urban park. 2. When (at what time of the day) is the UHI intensity at its maximum? The measurements should be made during nighttime; peak urban heat island magnitudes are obtained anytime between sunset and before sunrise. 3. How should you set-up your sensor? the measurements should be simultaneously, with both sensors located about 1.5-2 meters above the surface. It is importante to avoid locate the sensor close to building and wall. If it is possible is it preferrable locate ir in the center of the street. 4. How big is the temperature difference between where you measured the urban temperature (location A) and the reference location (location B)? Location A (City Center): 30ºC Location B (Urban Park): 29ºC Diference: 1ºC 5. Can you explain the magnitude of the difference? 1.What are possible influences of the immediate surroundings where measurements were taken? The temperatures were taken from a local station data. In city center there is less vegetation and natural surface. The material of buildings absorbs more heat and releases it back into the environment all night long. In the second location, the station is located inside a large urban park, with natural vegetation. The shadow and evapotranspiration provided by trees cand positevely affect the microclimate by the reduction of the temperature. 2. What influence does the weather have on the measurement? (e.g. season, wind, clouds etc.) The weather was predominantly cloudy, so it is possible that it could have reduced the intensity of the urban heat island. Due to intense urbanization in the first point, there is also the possibility of buildings interfering on winds, and consequently in the removal of heat by them. 6. Can you elaborate a number of interventions against the UIH in your city, which are carried out by different actors? (e.g. government, city council, private initiative etc.). In case you cannot find interventions to prevent UIH in your city, can you think elaborate a number of possible interventions? The government is elaborating the Urban Forest Master Plan to map urban vegetation and plan the better ways to develop public policies to increase vegetation in the city. Recently, local and regional government cronstructed 2 large parks in the central area, with green areas and water fountains.
