1. Think and comment on an existing Citizen Design Science project in urban design and planning from your area or country. In my country Citizen Design Science is something absolutely new, not many of the mayors pay attention to consult their ideas with the citizen and really take into account their point of view when it comes to designing public spaces. However, very useful instrument that is connected with CDS is a civic budget which is now very popular along Polish cities. Local community can vote for projects that are the most crucial and the government is obliged to accomplish them. Usually people vote for thing such as: renewal of green areas, playgrounds for children, additional street lights etc., things that make the city more livable. 2. Think and comment on the following example: Habitats of a certain neighborhood don’t feel safe when they walk in their neighborhood in the evening and during the night. You are working for the local government and want to solve this problem through improvement of the public spaces. How would you start-up a Citizen Design Science project? * From my point of view safety in public places is one of the most important conditions to create a livable city. If citizens don’t feel safe, they’re trying to avoid activities in the public spaces which harms social, economic and cultural life of local community and wastes the social bonds. When it comes to the problem mentioned in the question, I would try to implement the instruments below: • Educate policemen about ‘community policing’ which is people-oriented philosophy of policing public spaces. The most important thing in ‘community policing’ is to stay close to the local community – organizing workshops, discussions and interviews; • Install more street lights, not only on the streets but also along pavements, in parks, squares etc.; • Organize a neighborhood watch which help the citizen to solve their problems with the crime itself. Educate the citizens about good attitudes and ways of preventing crime and violence and also the way they can cooperate with the police; • Design public spaces according to CPTED method (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) which helps to make the space more resilient. 3. Imagine that you have set up a project wherein you would like to make use of Citizen Design Science. Which guidelines are important in creating your own Citizen Design Science project? Guidelines that are important in creating CDS project: • Involve the local community in the project; • Ensure the communication between the citizens and local authority (using internet, or in the meetings); • Define the main needs of the citizens and pick those project that should be implement with priority; • Take a look at big picture of the city including environmental issues, transportation, people activity and happiness etc.
