1. What are the dominant fossil fuels used in your country? Use www.iea.org/sankey to discover it (Hint: e aware of the flow of the energy in the Sankey diagram. Sometimes a part of the production of energy goes to the export of a country. Exported energy won't be consumed by your country itself). The most recent data for Poland consider year 2014. It shows that the dominant fossil fuel used in my country is coal (54.03 mln tones are produced and 6.42 imported from other countries). Although the part of the production is exported, 47.98 mln tones remains in the country for citizens’ use. 2. Where are the dominant fossil fuels mainly used for in your country? (e.g. transport, industry, non-energy use etc.) Sankey diagram for Poland shows that dominant fossil – coal – is used mainly for producing electricity in power stations. It takes 39.09 mln tones from 47.98 in general. Most of this electricity is used for the category ‘Other’. 3. It is your task to create a new policy in order to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy of your country. How would you do that? Think of how you can improve the sources and the consumption of energy. Polish economy is largely based on coal due to large deposits of this fossil and a developed mining industry. In my country it would be very difficult to discourage people from using coal as the main fuel, even though its production and usage is environmentally harmful. However, I believe that some solutions could be implemented to improve the situation. As for me, the most important could be: • Tax incentives for enterprises that use renewable energy sources to fulfill their energy needs; • Subsidies for households that install solar panels to produce energy for their usage; • Incentives for local governments that decided to produce energy for their usage from renewable sources (e.g. installing wind power plant); • Regulating main rivers to use power from water current; • Change education system to make young people more aware when it comes to issues connected with renewable sources.
