2A. The main UHI effects that I can see in my area of New York, NY USA are from massive automobile congestion & traffic, subway trains, buses, rapidly growing population in the urban core, heavy industry, the large amounts of steam used to heat the Huge buildings, city blocks, infrastructure and skyscrapers and the ever expanding skyline and building development not only in Manhattan but also Queens and Brooklyn as well. New York is turning into 1 large connected Central Business District. 2B. The significant UHI effects in my area are as follows, the Summer Heat In New York is Up To 20.0° HOTTER IN THE CITY THAN IN NEARBY RURAL AREAS, Average 2.7°, CITY SUMMERS ARE HOTTER THAN IN RURAL AREAS 1 FEWER DAYS ABOVE 90° EACH YEAR THAN RURAL AREAS. 2C. The following images are labeled for reuse in the public domain and I found them through wikimedia images. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/NYC-Skyline-1.jpg and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Downtownarmonk.jpg/640px-Downtownarmonk.jpg 3. Some of the measures that I would propose to increase livability related to the UHI effect in NYC are to 1st discourage all non-essential vehicular traffic by making civilian non-essential motorists pay for daily use of roads and highways and to invest more into public transportation infrastructure in order to lower the number of vehicles on the roads, bridges and highways that make up New York City. The need to create modern, high capacity, clean energy mass transportation is tremendous. Second, to increase LEED Gold design in buildings and to give existing buildings financial incentives and tax rewards to convert to newer cleaner designs and uses of energy. Third to try and get heavy industry to move outside the city by offering incentives. 4. Planting more trees, plants and encouraging solar power use to all buildings when possible. 4. I don't know of any truly feasible polices that are planned to reduce the UHI effect but I do know many have been discussed. One recent change has been to remove the toll barriers on bridges and tunnels to allow more free traffic flow. New York is full of bureaucracy and it takes long amounts of time for simple changes to be made.
