FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2016-06-28 by Ryan Hare
One of the major issues that the city of São Paulo faces is the phenomenal amount of gridlock traffic that occurs all around the city going into the city center, especial during the peak periods. In this picture we can see the infamous elevated avenue Presidente Costa e Silva (popularly known as "Minhocão"). Since its construction it has been a major target of criticism and is even facing a possible demolition. The biggest issues with the avenue is the horrendous amount of traffic that it has generated in a residential area and the sound pollution it has emits by being so close to the lower flats. Two invisible information that we can take out is the amount of traffic that leads and comes from the city center during peak times and the lack of decent public transport that could relieve the avenue. Another invisible information that is not so apparent in the photo is the concentration of homeless people that have gathered beneath the elevated avenue. Due to lack of decent housing and rising poverty, people have started to use these elevated avenues as protection against the weather, making the areas more and more dangerous. With the information that we can gather about the movement of the population we can invest more in public transportation, creating a more efficient system that can cope with the vast amount of gridlock traffic that happens during peak hours, possibly get rid of the elevated avenue, sorting out the noise pollution and making the area safer (although that is a completely different issue, infinitely more complex).
