1. This picture has been taken by me in Napoli during a study trip. The street shown in the picture is Spaccanapoli one of the most popular narrow street in the centre of Napoli in terms of turistic attraction and citizen social area. Looking at the picture it is possible to gather many visible information. Due to the density of identifiable information, I decided to list just the most important from my point of view: pedestrian path on the left side of the street, car parking area on the right side, number of buildings on both side facing each other, street level (the street is sharply sloped), low number of external lights, buildings in a derelict condition, clothes hang outside the balconies to dry up. 2. Invisible information that can be gained from the picture are: a. Number of people (citizen and tourist) that are walking through the street to go to Napoli city centre. b. Number of people affected by disability living in the buildings. 3. The invisible information listed can lead us to a certain deductions. By gaining the number of people that are walking through the street to go to Napoli centre, and when these groups of people are using the street in a certain times of the day; it is possible to restrict the access to car by using bollard or telematic door/computerized access point. By simply planning restricted access of the street, the flow of people commuting or just walking/visiting the area will be safe and comfortable. Moreover cars will be using different way to move, avoiding traffic congestion due to different speed (pedestrian vs car) in the street. The second invisible information is related to safety. Looking at the picture it is possible to say that a high number of families are living in the building, an interesting data will be to find out how many of them need facility to move from their house to anywhere else. This information can be used to design facilities like: reducing the slope to 2%, creating resting intervals on the pedestrian path; or drop off area for people affected by disability. Napoli is a fascinating city, dense and strongly rooted in the past, therefore it will be complicate to make big changes in, however small focused intervention can make a big change.
