NOTE: This image is not my own. I had to source one from the internet. This is the Trump hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is mostly comprised of Chinese steel and Bangladeshi furnishings (Source: NY Times). Even in the U.S., one of the world's top steel producers, outsourcing for cheaper construction materials is common. In developing countries, the same pattern can be seen. In some instances, Chinese steel producers are actually establishing locations closer to these developing countries to cut costs. In reality, this trend of finding the cheapest construction materials is not sustainable. While developed countries like the U.S. may be able to more safely source cheaper construction materials abroad, it is important for developing countries to not hedge their economies on unsustainable building practices. So if a country like Indonesia were to build a hotel like this one, it should explore more sustainable materials more locally sourced for the construction process.
