Heifer International headquarters, located in my hometown, Little Rock, Arkansas, was built with local materials in mind. For example, the steel structure and aluminum skin was manufactured three blocks away from the site, and the glass exterior was recycled across the street. The timber roof was locally sourced from Arkansas forests, as well as the limestone elements outside. Even the toilet partitions and various other design elements were made of recycled materials like sawdust—from the construction site. However, the bamboo flooring was the only material the architects used that wasn’t locally sourced, but the exact origin was not specified. (I’m guessing China or somewhere in Asia.) I’ve attached pictures of Arkansas limestone, bamboo in China, and Heifer International Headquarters in Little Rock. I do not own any of the images.
