Townhouses in Bangkok are usually built by private developers. They usually build the same townhouse for more than 200 units in each project, so that the developer can use modern construction process of prefabrication to reduce the construction cost, labour and time. This kind of construction is no longer a localised activity. With capitalism, middle-income people cannot buy an empty land and build their own house. They are dependant on the real estate tycoons that buy the huge land plot from the landlord and build the townhouses cheaply in prefabrication factory. The walls, columns and floors were made from concrete in the factory and delivered to the site. The construction process could be done in 4-6 months due to the advance technology. As a result, there is no need of local construction workers. Thailand can produce a lot of cement products and developers will continue using this prefabrication technology as it is cheaper. There are a few products of building components that may be imported from China, which is representing the globalised economy. However, concrete and cement are neither reusable, nor renewable, and Thailand cannot produce a lot of steel. As a consequence, the green industry of renewable construction material should be promoted, bamboo could be the alternative way of new construction material in this Southeast Asian region, since it is renewable and make the construction process more sustainable.
