(Photo taken of the Internet http:www.lingen.de since it is really foggy right now and there is no way to take a good picture) This is an image of the historic town square in the middle of Lingen in Northern Germany. You can see the historic city hall, a cafe, two shops and places for rest. If you were to observe the same spot for an extended period of time, you would be able to see that the square is mainly used for a bi weekly farmers market and some open air events. Furthermore you could count the people passing by and infer the attractiveness of the location for retailers. If you were observing multiple spots in the center you would notice that most shopping takes place in an adjacent street but the market place still features some cafes which are well frequented. This frequency information could be used to see which areas of the city hold potential for retail developments and which areas should be given another use (such as living spaces). Another example of invisible information which could be made visible in the image is the distance to work and living space of the people visiting the square. This information could be directly used to improve the city planning. Underneath the square is an underground parking lot, understanding where people that spend their leisure time at the square live and work could either help developing those areas (add more squares) or could be a motivation to move living and office spaces closer to the center.
