FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2016-12-12 by Samantha Martin
Here is a photo in downtown Boise, Idaho. 1) You can see snow on the sidewalk right in front, a cyclist and pedestrian using a crosswalk, and a large black and white building with a modern sign saying "Owyhee". If you look closely enough, you can see steam coming from the ground on the sidewalk that lines the building. 2) Invisible information is that the building is a historic building built in 1910 that has been remodeled in 2013. The other invisible thing is why the sidewalk in front of the building is steaming. 3) I want to discuss the invisible information of the steaming sidewalk in front of this building. There is snow on all the sidewalks in the City but this one. The reason for this is geo-thermal. The city of Boise has natural hot water flowing underneath the ground. When this building was renovated the developers used the hot water to heat the sidewalk so in winter the snow would melt when it landed on the sidewalk. Geo-thermal can also heat the building and be used for hot showers in the building.
