However, I spent last weekend in Berlin and I have taken advantage of that to present an almost unique and special infrastructure that overrun the whole city. Nevertheless I will also include a typical dutch infrastructure to keep tracing The Netherlands. **1. Berlin’s pipelines** It might sounds weird but one the things I wanted to see the most when visiting Berlin were the unusual pipeline net that goes along Berlin’s streets. As Civil engineer (and simple citizen) I wanted to observe this particular solution by myself! ![enter image description here][1] Berlin ground water table is quite high thus soil needs to be constantly drained, overall when a new excavation/earth work is about starting. These pipes pump the water away from the building foundations when it's needed and redirect this water to the canals, river or simply they disappear into the canalisation. I saw the end of some of them in Spree river, really close to the East Side Gallery Wall :) This infrastructure is completely necessary to the city and creates a unique urban landscape which is object of many wonders and guessings among the tourists! ![enter image description here][2] ![enter image description here][3] **2. Dutch drawbridges** The Netherlands (also known as the flooded country) is based on a net of several dykes/channels carefully planned throught the country. Cities (neither Groningen) are no exception. However, I’ll be focusing in bridges, more specially in drawbridges. These structures are extremely important as they allow to keep the navegability of the channels without interrupting liveability and connectivity of the streets and roads. Bridges spread throughout the town keep the same street level which is great for pedestrian, bikes and cars and thanks to their design they allow boats to sail city channels with no height restrictions. ![enter image description here][4] ![enter image description here][5] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14326354027959411.png [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14326354245614699.png [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1432635460846420.png [4]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14326354962622531.png [5]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14326355178163489.png
