The image shows the large pipes that transports the hot water used to heat the blocks of apartments during the cold winters of south-western Kazakhstan. The reason why they're on the surface is, perhaps, the ability to service them effectively in case of damage. The impact on the landscape is evident and with obvious consequences. However, the dependency on heating over the winter is absolute and, as in most former Communist countries, the system used to provide this service is highly centralized. There are several smaller or bigger central heating systems in Atyrau, providing heating in different quarters of the city. [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14336024888578206.jpg
