Attached to the two wooden poles seen, there are various cables. Usually, the cables in the upper half are the electricity cables. They consist of the primary and secondary distribution cables and a step-down transformer (not seen here). Below are the communication cables which consists of CableTV, Fibre and telephony. Additionally, there are fibre splitter units and street lights (not seen here) attached to some of these poles. Neighbourhoods across Trinidad depend on this type of infrastructure to get electricity and communications into households. Some of these poles have been there since the inception of the electricity distribution company in Trinidad (T&Tec). There has been a campaign in recent years to replace some of the wooden poles with sturdier and more durable steel poles in areas where the wooden poles have deteriorated. In newer communities, the electricity and communications cables are all underground.
