[1]: http://i59.tinypic.com/sxj638.jpg The photo I attached is from Pune in India. During my time there each building I stayed in was connected to the electrical grid. Whether it there was electricity available was another question, however the point is that India has a gigantic electrical grid with millions of nodes across the country. I think this image should serve as a warning about the sustainability of rapidly developing infrastructure. Given the correlation between access to electricity and quality of life, when introducing electricity to an area it may well be a case of getting the area connected to the grid as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, there will be cases where the people performing this work do not have access to the information to do this work in a way that allows it to be easily maintained. Although I don’t have a photograph, I also went into the Dharavi slum in Mumbai where almost 1 million of Mumbai’s poorer citizens live. It surprised me that even within the slums there were mobile phone vendors on most corners, showing their reliance on communications infrastructure. Many people view food, water and shelter as the bare essentials, but in modern society it would be fair to add electricity and communications to these essentials.
