This picture was taken by me while I was waiting for the underground in Madrid, the city where I live. I think it is a great example of the key role infrastructure - specially electricity - plays in our daily lives. People who live in big cities like Madrid have developed a high level of dependency on the underground infrastructure and the possibilities it offers. Madrid is a city where distances are long, traffic jams common and the time people have to spend to go to work or to study is high. That´s why, a infrastructure like the underground, becomes a key element of design and planning for the city now and for the future. To sum up, the crucial dimensions for designing future sustainable urban systems for a city (in this case talking about Madrid, but applicable to all cities) are water, energy, transportation and health infrastructure and it is very important that governments, urban planners and architects learn how to optimise the relationship between the four dimensions.
