While England's manufacturing and commercial sectors do not rely on the canal system any longer, the infrastructure remains an important aspect of Birmingham, It is now used more for recreation, with house boats and barges using these waterways. Also, the canals have become prime "waterfront" real estate for urban residences. However, one negative impact one witnesses from the canals, is the filth that collects in these waters. The canals are not very clean, and one can see garbage and trash floating in them. This is a negative aspect that has an impact on the quality of life around the canals, and could potentially have an impact on health as well (water-born diseases, mosquitos, etc.) ![Canals in Birmingham, England ][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14343907287971414.jpg
