This photo shows some buildings downtown with offices and with appartments that need to be heated during cool months of October and November, during the cold winter conditions between december and march (with sometime -20 to -30 Celcius). Furthermore, in summer Montreal is a hot city with some canicules (30 to 35 Celcius) and in these conditions the use of air conditionner is a necessity. Finally, a lot of factories and many public services use electricity (telecommunications, subway, ...) need electrical energy. This dependency has been proved in January 1998 during an electrical failure caused by an ice storm. During the crisis, four million people were left in the dark for periods ranging from few days to five weeks (between Ottawa, Montreal and Sherbrooke). Note: In Quebec, 100% of the electrical energy come from hydropower. With 62 hydroelectric plants, Hydro-Québec is the largest electricity producer in Canada and the world's largest producer of hydroelectricity. The capacity of its facilities stands at 36,643 megawatts (MW).
