When I had the chance to travel to Mumbai a few years ago, I was stuck by the often hap hazard nature of the electricity infrastructure in the city, in all but the wealthiest areas. Vast masses of tangled cables were to be seen on every street, often as a result of residents adapting the existing network to suit their own needs. It was clear that this rapidly developing city was becoming more and more dependent on electricity and that urban planners were having difficulty in keeping up with the increasing needs of the city's population.
