1.1 SAFETY AND SECURITY - Rampant crime overshadows every other criterion ![Typical joburg house with Ribbon wire, spikes, electric fencing and probably private security as well ][1] 1.2 JOB OPPORTUNITIES - Joburg is the hub for employment opportunity 1.3 INFRASTRUCTURE - MAINTENANCE THEREOF - Joburg has good infrastructure, but it has not been maintained 1.4 MOBILITY/TRANSPORTATION - No South African city has good public transportation 1.5 CONNECTIVITY - vital to have good connectivity. 89% of South Africans have cellphones, 34% have smartphones (PEWGLOBAL Cellphones in Africa (April 2015)) - voice is good, data is a major problem - introduction of improved broadband has been estimated to improve GDP by 1.5% (www.mybroadband.co.za) 2. WHY DO I LIVE IN JOBURG? Despite the negative criteria, I enjoy where I live 2.1 AFFORDABILITY - My house cost E30 000 2.2.LOCATION 6km from city centre, 1km from NasRec Expo Centre, 2km from Soccer City, house abuts Crown Mines Golf Course, where I have access to walk with my dogs. ![The view from my garden-Crown Mines Golf Course][2] 2.3 JOB OPPORTUNITIES - Joburg has the best job opportunities for me 2.4 INFRASTRUCTURE - Have running water, electricity, waste removal and good suburban roads - 3 major highways within 2-4 km of where I live. 2.5 COMMUNITY - I know my neighbours and most of the people who live in my vicinity - the South of Joburg has a good spirit of community. 3 FULFILMENT OF LIVEABILITY CRITERIA PERSONAL RESIDENCE 1 SAFETY AND SECURITY - 35% 2 JOB OPPORTUNITIES - 650% 3 INFRASTRUCTURE - MAINTENANCE THEREOF - 85% 4 MOBILITY/TRANSPORTATION - 60% (Own vehicle) 5 CONNECTIVITY - 80% (own providers) TOTAL 32/100 CITY OF JOBURG 1.1 SAFETY AND SECURITY - 15% 1.2 JOB OPPORTUNITIES - 75% 1.3 INFRASTRUCTURE - MAINTENANCE THEREOF - 25% 1.4 MOBILITY/TRANSPORTATION - 30% (Own vehicle) 1.5 CONNECTIVITY - 35% (own providers) TOTAL 18/100 4 MICHELINE FOR MAYOR I would transform the Metropolitan police from a force dedicated to collecting traffic fines to fill Joburg's coffers to a force that promotes safe neighbourhoods by maintaining an active presence. This would go towards building trust between citizens and the police (currently lacking). The SA Police could then concentrate on major crimes (in Joburg at least). 5. WHERE WOULD I GO? I am limited as to where I can move because of affordability. I would not be able to leave South Africa. 5.1 Midvaal municipality 20km south of where I live now, and not under ANC local government, Midvaal promises better service delivery. The lifestyle is semi-rural with smallholdings, yet close enough to Joburg to find work. Crime is still a problem though. 1. Politics - more accountable municipality 2 Better service delivery 3. Job Opportunities 4. Climate - same as Joburg 5. Rural vs urban 5.2 Capetown 1. More livable city, according to most polls 2. Politics - more accountable municipality 3 Better service delivery 5.3 If money were no object - possibly Argentina (Cordoba) or Italy (Firenze) possibly Perth Australia, to where most South Africans emigrate 3.
