If we look back at a few hundred years, the best mode of transportation was on foots. Apart from that, animal back rides were taken. But, if we look at the transportation system today, there is a complete shift in it. Today animal back rides are taken only for an experience, and walking to work or commute is not considered feasible. For the daily chores and work, people find it more convenient to travel by public transport (if their place of living has good public transport service) or use their private vehicle. Electricity, undoubtedly, is one form of energy people are highly dependent on. This can be easily understood in the use of generators and invertors which allow to store electricity to be used during the time of power cut. This proves that we are unable to stay without electricity even for a few hours. Also, the use of street lights used for general lighting of the roads and streets and outdoor landscape garden lights evidently shows the use of electricity. This is not only for the purpose of aesthetics, but safety is also a major concern. Not particularly in Guwahati, but in India, a part of the railway system runs on electricity. And electricity, primarily, is being produced using water, i.e., hydrological power stations are primarily being used. Waterways is also a major way of transportation in the city. And apart from that, with growing pollution and health related hazards happening all around the globe, dependency of people on all the materialistic things and facilities have become an inseparable part of the urban population. Overall, it can be seen that there is long chain of dependency of the urban population, and to a great extent, of the rural population on energy and on the facilities provided by the technological advancements. This will highly influence in the development of future cities. People come to cities for a better and safe lifestyle, and while designing future cities it will become immensely necessary to keep in the mind, which can be called the basic necessities, of the urban population. And for this, technological advent and energy usage of various kinds, whether water, fuel or electricity, will play a major role. ![][1] Image of Guwahati City [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14635574227467186.jpg
