This dam is a very important structure for the country and for the region, providing electricity, water, and simultaneously storage of both. This dam is a strategic structure for the water supply for the whole region, being a major source of water for the agriculture sector, particularly for the olive plantations in that region, that influences the production of olive oil. The impact of the dam in the water management of the region is crucial in the summer, since the region tends to become pretty arid between July and September in regular years or even more in particularly hot years. The dam has shaped the whole region, in terms of territorial aspects, submerging a small village and making small changes in the micro climate in the region due to the large lake created. This dam have a direct influence on the cities because the alentejo region is a major source of resources for the big cities in Portugal and is included in the important structures that support the cities in terms of water and energy.
